Car air conditioning systems cool the vehicle and its occupants in hot weather, and are now a common feature in most modern cars.
Car air conditioners use significant power; although in comparison the drag of a car with closed windows is less than if the windows are open.
There is a constant debate on the effect of air conditioning on the fuel efficiency of a vehicle.
Factors which are taken into account when looking at fuel mileage are wind resistance, aerodynamics and engine power and weight.
The compressor is the heart of an air conditioning system.
It takes refrigerant as a low pressure gas, pumps it up to a high pressure gas, and circulates it into the discharge hose.
Compressors are much like little engines.
Most of them have pistons, piston rings, a crank shaft, and bearings, just like a car engine.
They need to have oil circulated through them to lubricate all the moving parts.
This oil is mixed into and carried with the refrigerant.
That is why running an air conditioner without any refrigerant is like running your cars engine without any oil.
A few basic reasons why an air conditioning clutch does not engage, even if you have a power supply down to the compressor.
Let's first of all understand how the compressor starts to 'pump' when we switch the air conditioning on inside the car.
At the front of the compressor, within the pulley, is a magnetic coil.
When this is energised it pulls in the front plate of the compressor with a distinctive 'click'.
The refrigerant is then pumped around the system.
1 BAD EARTH: the coil relies on a good earth to complete the circuit, check this by proving the earth circuit.
Accumulator: The accumulator is located at the evaporator outlet.
Its function is to separate liquid retained from vapour, retain the liquid and release the vapour to the compressor.
Compressor: Component that pumps refrigerant gas and increases the pressure and temperature of the gas vapour.
Condenser Component of an air conditioning system which turns the refrigerant vapour back to liquid by removing heat from the vapour.
Cycling Clutch System: Term referring to the system control, provided by the engaging and disengaging of the compressor.
To ensure you get the optimum performance and efficiency from your Car Air Conditioning System you need to have it maintained.
Although not usually advised in the vehicle service schedule or by the main dealers, your Vehicle Air Conditioning system requires servicing by qualified engineers usually every 2 years or around 20,000 miles.
